First Day at School (The)
by Yvonne Jagtenberg
Age Range: Under_5
It is the first day at school and Leo is very frightened of this unknown, new environment. He is reluctant to join in with the rest of the class in the various activities despite the other children trying to make him feel welcome. Eventually,Leo overcomes his anxieties by wearing a big grotesque wolf mask in a ‘Little
Red Riding Hood’ play.
This is a clever book where the wolf mask can also be perceived as a representation of a young boy’s anxiety on his first day at school. The crayon, child-like, atmospheric illustrations are in perfect tune with this poignant story of the fears of a child on the first day at school. This is a typical example of contemporary children’s book illustration with a strong European flavour.
