Last Rainbow Bird (The)
by Nora Brech
Age Range: 6-8
When Jo and Alex find a distraught Professor Feather slumped over his desk and discover the reason for his distress – if he’s unable to find a mate for the Rainbow bird, the rarest bird of all, its kind will become extinct – they decide to set out by riverboat on a quest to find this rare bird. As they travel through a spectacular forest and find many extraordinary birds from the excitable Big-to-Little Birds to the colourful Underwater Birds and glowing Lamp Birds, no one has seen the last Rainbow Bird. Has their mission failed?
The Last Rainbow Bird by Norwegian author and illustrator, Nora Brech was inspired by her fascination with birds and a childhood of being taught about animals by her biology-professor father. As she says in an author’s note at the back of the book “The shock of discovering, as a child, that animals were becoming extinct because of what humans are doing to the planet has always stuck with me.”
Although the Rainbow Birds in this picture book are imaginary it is a heartfelt story offering readers a gentle introduction to wildlife conservation and the natural world and showing, that like Professor Feather in the story, scientists from around the world are working hard to help stop rare birds from becoming extinct.
Brech’s vibrant illustrations have a rich intensity that is captivating especially those of the magnificent kaleidoscopic colours of the Rainbow Bird.
