Later, When I'm Big
by Bette Westera
Age Range: Under_5
Later When I’m Big was a Mildred L Batchelder Honor Book for 2024 and it’s easy to see why this picture book by Dutch author Bette Westera, translated by Laura Watkinson, with its playful and humorous look at being small but dreaming big, is a little bit different.
With sparse text, it’s the visual narrative that is the most compelling. A young child wonders about all the different things they will do when they are bigger – “Later, when I’m big, I’ll dare to do lots and lots of things.” Visiting a waterpark with their mother, the child’s imagination takes flight as they visualise all the amazing things they are going to do in the future which include kissing an elephant’s trunk, sleeping in the attic of a haunted castle, helping the zookeeper clean the lions’ and tigers’ teeth, diving with a mermaid and dancing with jellyfish and skiing down slopes where no one’s skied before. As well as the fantastical, there are everyday things too, from “Drinking cold soda, even if it tickles my throat” and jumping off a giant diving board.
These musings evoke the daydreaming of a young child. The child-like artwork by Belgian artist Mattias De Leeuw with its sketchy black and white ink outlines together with the bold colour watercolour washes are striking making this an enchanting book.
