Raymond the Buffalo
by Lou Beauchesne
Age Range: 6-8
Have you ever become emotionally attached to a book? Conversely, has the book and its main character ever become attached to you? This is certainly the case in Raymond the Buffalo—originally written in French by Lou Beauchesne and then translated into English by Susan Ouriou and Christelle Morelli.
Ramond the Buffalo, a book-within-a-book story, recounts Gilbert’s special attachment to his own book, also called Raymond the Buffalo, and the eponymous character Raymond’s attachment to his owner, Gilbert. Upon opening the book, there is a “this book belongs to” label, which includes Gilbert’s name, as well as the crossed-out names of its previous owners: Gilbert’s father and grandfather, Oscar and Paul.
Similar to the plot of Toy Story where the little boy Andy accidentally loses his most beloved toys, the plot of Raymond the Buffalo presents the storyline of Gilbert’s mother accidentally scooping up the generation-owned Raymond the Buffalo book with overdue library books and leaving it at the library…away from home! Readers of this chapter book go on the adventure with Raymond himself, meeting new people at the library and navigating life away from Gilbert.
Raymond, illustrated by Kate Chappell (using gouache, pencil crayon, and Photoshop), is the most endearing buffalo of which one could ever make acquaintance. How could one not fall in love with a buffalo described as “brave, strong and hairy, [facing] danger while singing a happy song” about adoring “pickles with lemon?”
