Book Book (The)
by Sophie Benini Pietromarchi
Age Range: 9-11
In this delightful arts and crafts activity book, Sophie Benini Pietromarchi takes children on a fantastic journey through the world of bookmaking. First published in Italy it has now been published in English by Tara Publishing.
The opening page tells us that ‘Books Are like Houses’ – “I’ve always thought the most mysterious doors are the covers of books” – and the first three pages of text are inside the shape of an egg. The journey begins with looking into the past – how it all started. Chapter 2, ‘Treasure Hunt’ gets children looking inside their pencil case to discover what is in there and how each item found can help to create a book. The next suggestion is to explore the kitchen; egg boxes are great shapes for making a book cover, onions can be used to decorate paper, string can be used to bind the book or cornflakes boxes can make a good book cover.
Chapter 3, ‘Writing a Story’ involves massaging the imagination, inspiration and the seed of the story, while chapter 4, ‘Planning the Book’ looks at the storyboard (which children may already be familiar with) and the book cover. Chapter 5 explores creating illustrations, technique and the use of colour and chapter 6, ‘Techniques and Other Muddles’ looks at the many different types of books – an accordion book, a never-ending book, a leaf book, shape book, scroll book, TV book, animated book, feather book, pop-up book and book-in-three – that can be made.
The final chapter gives details of the workshops that took place in Chiani, Tuscany, Italy and the materials used from India (provided by Tara Publishing) together with the work that the children created. A perfect guide to creating a book that will be an invaluable tool in any classroom.
