A Tiger Like Me
by Michael Engler
Age Range: Under_5
A little boy – um, no, a tiger, wakes up in the morning in his tiger den, yawns and stretches before filling his lungs and letting out a mighty roar. First, he avoids a wash making a fast escape from the bathroom, then he devours a good breakfast of tiger flakes and a big glass of blood-red orange juice. Now he is ready for any new adventures!
This playful story by German author Michael Engler, translated by Laura Watkinson, is written in the format of a poem which allows the text to glide along capturing the child's rich imagination as he pretends to be a tiger. His tiger alter ego enables him to test the boundaries with his mum and dad resulting in a degree of mischievousness from being ready to pounce on a freshly baked cake or frightening his father with a big roar so that his newspaper and cup of coffee go flying into the air. But at night, even an exuberant tiger sneaks into his tiger-parents’ den to curl up beside them because he is a cuddly little tiger cub too!
The warm illustrations by German artist Joëlle Tourlonias provide an expressive array of the different moods of the little tiger as he bounds through the pages. A delightful and fun story that will resonate with young readers.
