Rubbish and Recycling: Step-by-Step
by Gerard Bertolini and Claire Delalande
Age Range: 9-11
How long does it take for a piece of chewing gum to break down as waste? What happens to milk cartons, tissues or plastic bags once they have been used? And what is a Totter? In fact everything about rubbish that you probably didn’t want to know! These are just some of the topics covered in this imaginative and fun book about rubbish and recycling.
French authors Gérard Bertolini and Claire Delalande have created a perfect all-round information book. Set out in easy-to-read chapters, each devoted to a different topic, it contains short snappy paragraphs which are broken up by the colourful comical illustrations by Nicolas Hubesch and amusing, but informative captions underneath. Rubbish and Recycling is divided into three main sections – ‘On the Rubbish Trail’, ‘ What About the Earth’ and ‘What Can You Do?’
‘On the Rubbish Trail’ looks at what rubbish is, the history of rubbish, what’s in your bin, collection, sorting, recycling and what happens to the leftover rubbish. ‘What About the Earth’ looks at why we create rubbish, our ecological footprint and what it costs. The ‘What Can You Do’ section explores the different useful ways in which we can create less rubbish together with a quiz, mini dictionary and useful websites for finding out more information.
The layout and comic-style approach will appeal to children and help them to learn about a serious subject in a fun way. The simple and straightforward text together with the humorous illustrations is key to helping children understand the concepts. This is a book that will interest adults and well as children.
Rubbish and Recycling is one of the first books in the French ‘Step-by-Step’ series series – that teaches children about the world, one step at a time – translated and published in English by Gecko Press.
These guides are extremely easy to use and will help adults explain things simply and succinctly. The questions within the text are ideal for sparking off discussion or activity and their versatility make them an excellent resource that will be a great addition to any classroom.
