diminished, we are starved’

Hello, Sailor
by Andre Sollie
Age Range: 9-11
Matt the lighthouse keeper watches that everything is safe out at sea, but mostly
he waits for the return of his friend Sailor who has promised to return to take him
off round the world. Every day his friends Rose and Felix bring Matt’s food, and
his post. Matt invites them to his birthday party, together with his friend Emma,
who has knitted him a jumper for when he and Sailor go round the world together.
But Matt is only interested in whether Sailor will return, and when he does they
disappear without a word, to start their travels.
A poignant little tale of friendship between two men, and their commitment to each other which overrides all other friendships, it is delicately handled and with illustrations which add layers of extra information to the text itself. A pity that it was decided to use this title, which has overtones for English readers.
