What's Hidden in the Woods?
by Aina Bestard
Age Range: 6-8
What is hidden in the woods? A first glance shows that it is all still, but have a look more closely through the three coloured cello magnifying glasses – green, blue and red – and the wonders of nature emerge before your eyes. As if by magic, each glass shows animals and plants coming life. Look through the green glass and nothing is moving in the forest. Next try the blue glass and suddenly there are signs of life, finally, look through the red glass and there are many secrets to be found.
Starting with the first double-page-spread you’ll see a thick green forest through the green glass, but by the time you look through the blue glass there aren’t many places to hide; with the trees cut down individual animals can be spotted clearly. Through the red glass it shows that it’s not just animals who live in the wood. On another page, the green glass shows a gnarled, rough tree, the blue glass a parent bird bringing food to its nest and through the red glass you can see the nest itself with the baby chicks.
Using exquisitely detailed patterns throughout the book, Spanish author/illustrator Aina Bestard has created a visual feast that both children (and adults) will love. Be amazed at how life in the forest, unseen to the naked eye, comes to life when the coloured magnifying glasses are used. On every double page spread there is a line of text that aligns with each coloured glass to help guide the reader along. There is also a useful pocket at the front of the book to keep the magnifiers in.
What's Hidden in the Woods? is a uniquely clever book that is bound to keep children absorbed for many hours. As well as being fun it is also a thought-provoking book with an environmental theme.
