Babar's Celesteville Games
by Phyllis Rose de Brunhoff
Age Range: 6-8
Babar and his family are thrilled that Celesteville is to host the Worldwide Games. This is their chance to see athletes compete from all over the world. Babar’s children, who are all grown up now, enjoy watching the warm-up practices – swimming and diving, track and field events, gymnastics and cycling as the athletes get ready for the main events.
Flora, in particular, likes watching the pole vaulting especially the handsome athlete Cory from the country of Mirza. Could it be that Flora is falling in love?
With recognisable characters, a sporting theme and internationalism and diversity in the uniting of two families and two countries, this is a perfect picture book for the Olympic year 2012.
Created by Jean de Brunhoff in 1931 from an original bedtime story by his wife, Babar has lived on through his son Laurent de Brunhoff who has kept his spirit alive for more than 50 years. Building on the original framework he has created many new and exciting adventures for the elephant family.
