Oksa Pollock 4: Tainted Bonds
by Anne Plichota and Cendrine Wolf
Age Range: 12+
Tainted Bonds is the fourth title in the phenomenal Oksa Pollock series. Following on from The Last Hope
The world is in turmoil: there have been terrible earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions and relentless torrential rain that have caused severe flooding. The magical realm of Edefia is also dying and only Oska, through her Gracious power, can save both worlds. It's her toughest challenge yet. Oska returned to Edefia with some of her fellow Runaways (at the end of Book Three), but there are several of those close to her who are absent: her formidable grandmother Dragomira has been lost to them altogether, sacrificing herself to open the portal to Edefia and Oska's mother and best friend Gus are still on the other side in London.
Kept virtually a prisoner in the Glass Column by her most deadly enemy Ocious, and his evil son Orthon, until it is time for her to enter the Cloak Chamber to meet her date with destiny and to restore the equilibrium of both worlds, Oksa must find a way to outmanoeuvre her enemies in order to prevent them from learning the secret of when the portal will open again to the outside world.
Oksa Pollock fans will enjoy this fast-paced fourth instalment in the saga by French authors Anne Plichota and Cendrine Wolf. The story is carefully crafted, with lots of action and intricate detail. It is a winning combination of fantasy – with the wonderful magical array of animals, plants and gadgets – heartbreak, through loss and the emotional rollercoaster of her burgeoning relationship with the mysterious Tugdual and the ever-present danger from an evil force that has the ability to destroy everything.
Like all the previous volumes it’s a real page-turner and translator Sue Rose has done an excellent job of continuing to capture all the complexities within the story.
