Three Musicians (The)
by Véronique Massenot
Age Range: 6-8
In the kingdom of Mirador, King Minus encourages his people to believe that there is a terrible beast known as Fire-Mouth living in their midst. Few have ever seen this beast in the flesh but everyone trembles whenever they hear its name. The King actively nurtures this fear as it helps him to successfully control his kingdom.
But everything changes one bright April morning when three musicians – Pierrot, Capucin, Harlequin and their dog Cocoa-pod, arrive in the town. As they play their music the people learn to sing, to dance and to speak openly of their fears. The king is not at all happy about this turn of events and plots to rid himself of these meddlesome musicians.
Véronique Massenot has created an enchanting story inspired by the painting of the ‘Three Musicians’ by Pablo Picasso. The stunning illustrations by Vanessa Hié capture the spirit and style of Picasso with a hint of cubism and the rich Mediterranean colours.
Children will be drawn into Hie's vibrant artwork as they follow the story of the three musicians. At the back of the book there is a reproduction of the ‘Three Musicians’ by Picasso painted in oils in 1921 together with a brief introduction to the painter and his work. Another beautiful art book from Prestel in the ‘Pictures That Tell Stories: Art for Children’ series.
