Blue Sky Morning
by Kim Jihyun
Age Range: Under_5
Eunny wakes up. She doesn’t rush, getting out of bed slowly, looking out of the window and noticing the town is waking up too with lots of people beginning their busy day. She then heads downstairs where Grandma makes eggs for breakfast. Soon it’s time for school and Eunny steps out into the crisp morning with Mama but they take their time as they share the walk to Mama’s bus stop to go to work which is just around the corner from Eunny’s school.
“But you’re not in a hurry today.
Stop for a moment, and look up.
The sky’s so big and so blue.
It’s a beautiful, blue sky morning.”
Eunny notices that it's bright and the “air feels fresh and cool” There are pretty pink petals of new flowers, the sky is so big and blue and the changing leaves – “Green turning to orange and yellow and red. Ready for a new season”. Mama and Eunny love this shared time together on the walk to school as it makes them both happy.
The inspiration for this gentle and subtle picture book by South Korean author, illustrator and graphic designer Kim Jihyun comes from her life with her young daughter Eunny. The narrative is unhurried and meanders slowly through Eunny’s ‘start to the day’ encouraging her, and the reader, to take their time, stop and notice the things around them which inevitably become lost amid the constant buzz of the modern world.
Jihyun’s exquisite artwork uses a mixed media of pencil, coloured pencils and watercolour which are rich in colour and full of intricate detail. Set in her old neighbourhood of Seongbuk-dong in Seoul, Jihyun lovingly recreates everyday scenes from the rooms in Eunny’s house to the streets and houses on the walk to school. From Eunny’s drawings on her bedroom walls to Grandma serving breakfast while her Mama hastily drinks her coffee or the dancing dragonflies in the big blue sky and playful ginger cats, each new scene makes you pause on the page.
An uplifting, beautiful and mindful story encouraging us to find the calm and beauty that is all around us.
