Ollie's Ski Trip
by Elsa Beskow
Age Range: 6-8
When six-year-old Ollie is given his first pair of skis he is eager to try them out. At the first snow, he sets off by himself and has all kinds of adventures meeting Jack Frost, Mrs Thaw (winter's cleaning lady who cleans up before spring arrives and the King of Winter).
Jack Frost takes Ollie to meet the King of Winter who lives in a luxurious white palace. There he meets a group of girls and boys knitting thick socks, ski-mitts and getting other presents ready for Christmas.
First published in Swedish as Ollies Skidfard in 1907, Swedish author and illustrator Elsa Beskow was regarded as the Beatrix Potter of Scandinavia because she was the first picture book creator to convey the idea of childhood. Her soft-toned watercolour illustrations are beautifully executed with such attention to detail that they are a joy to look at.
Although a picture book in format, the text is dense so it would is suitable for the slightly older 6-8 age group to read alone, but it is also suitable to be read aloud to a younger audience.
A large-size format was published in English by Floris Books in 2008.
