Sheep With Boots
by Maritgen Matter
Age Range: 6-8
Wolf is cold and very hungry as he trudges miserably through the snow with an icy wind blowing all around him. Coming across a lonely farmhouse with a big barn Wolf begins to rally, perhaps there will be something tasty to eat inside, he thinks. Here he meets Sheep who he cunningly persuades to go on an adventure with him.
Sheep is very impressed by Wolf’s knowledge. ‘ ”Experience, that’s where it’s at” ... said Wolf. “Experience” ... Sheep ruminated. “Where might that be? Is it very far away?” he asked’. Overcome by excitement at finding a new friend Sheep naively places his trust in Wolf as they set off together into the bitter cold night. But will Sheep fall foul of Wolf’s crafty plan?
This is an unusual tale of friendship for all ages. The delightfully humorous text by Dutch author Maritgen Malter and the exquisite black and red pen and ink drawings by Jan Jutte will ensure that this small, red, sophisticated picture book will become a firm favourite with children to be read again and again.
Suitable for older children as the language is at times quite challenging and the often subtle humour could be lost on a very young audience. Adults will really appreciate this book too.
