Babar and Father Christmas
by Jean de Brunhoff
Age Range: 6-8
Arthur, Pom, Flora and Alexander, the royal elephant children together with their friend Zephir the monkey write to Father Christmas inviting him to the land of the elephants and enclosing a list of what they would like in their stockings. The days go by but no reply arrives. On learning about this Babar decides to go in search of Father Christmas so that he can invite him to Celesteville in person. Babar travels to Europe and has many false leads but with the help of a dog named Duck, he reaches Father Christmas’s workshop in Bohemia. Can Babar find a way to bring him to the land of the elephants and grant his family their wish?
This heart-warming Christmas story was created by Jean de Brunhoff in 1940 from an original bedtime story by his wife, one of the seven Babar stories he wrote. Babar has continued to live on through the work of his son Laurent de Brunhoff who has kept his spirit alive for more than 50 years.
