Journey to the End of the World
by Henning Mankell
Age Range: 12+
Fifteen-year-old Joel is on the verge of leaving school and dreams of becoming a sailor like his father so that he can leave their small town. When a letter arrives telling them where ‘Mummy’ Jenny is, Joel and Samuel set off on a journey to Stockholm to find her.
This is a deeply moving account of Joel’s first encounter with his mother since she abandoned him as a small child and of the illness that takes hold of Samuel while they are in Stockholm. Although the most harrowing of all four books, Mankell’s comic interludes are still present and Joel always manages to be involved in some escapade such as losing his rucksack at the train station and being caught in an old peoples’ home where his mother works. The autobiographical voice of the author is never far away in Joel’s thoughts and experiences.
