‘We need the literature of other countries to expand our
horizons and stimulate our ideas. Without it, we are not only
diminished, we are starved’

Captain Rosalie
by Timothee de Fombelle
Age Range: 9-11
Five-and-a-half-year-old Rosalie spends her mornings at a school for older children while her mother goes to work. The schoolmaster sits Rosalie at the back of the class with a notebook and some pencils so she can do her drawing, but Rosalie is a Captain on a very secret mission: to teach herself to read.
While Rosalie’s father is away at war, her mother reads aloud some of his letters from the front lines letting her know he is thinking of her and looking forward to the end of the war and coming home. One day a letter is delivered that her mother doesn’t read out to her, instead hiding it away.
Award-winning French author Timothee de Fombelle’s heartfelt story, translated from French by Sam Gordon, and first published in the 2014 collection The Great War: Stories Inspired by Objects from the First World War, published by Walker Books, has now been published in a single volume with new illustrations by Isabelle Arsenault.
Captain Rosalie is an innovative and powerful way of bringing the realities of the First World War to the fore and it’s especially poignant when Rosalie, having accomplished her mission, sneaks home to read the hidden letter only to discover the truth in her father’s words as he reveals the futility of war and its terrible consequences.
Arsenault’s expressive artwork has a beautiful simplicity, which enhances Fombelle’s text, bringing a depth of emotion in its muted grey shades, starkly contrasting with Rosalie’s bright red hair.
As the review for the Times, Children’s Book of the Week says on the blurb on the back of the book it “packs a mighty punch” as it deals with the effects of war and grief.
