Yakari in the Land of the Wolves
by Job
Age Range: 9-11
Yakari is a young Sioux Native American who can understand and speak animal language. The winter season has now arrived and Yakari and his tribe are camping in the woodlands. Tormented Wolf, a warrior from Yakari's tribe is harbouring an obsession: he wants to take revenge on the wolf that attacked and injured him three years ago. The wolf managed to escape despite being wounded in one leg but has a limp.
Young Yakari has heard many tales of wolves which scare him and give him nightmares. But when Yakari encounters a limping wolf in the woodland the wolf explains how humans and animals can live in harmony together. Somehow Yakari has to find a way to change Tormented Wolf's perception of wolves and deter him from seeking revenge.
Yakari in the Land of the Wolves is the eighth adventure in the comic book series from France by his Swiss creators' writer Job (André Jobin) and artist Derib (Claude de Ribaupierre). Job’s plot, translated by Erica Jeffrey, involves a clever reversal of the roles between adult and child because it is Yakari who must be the wise one and advise Tormented Wolf. Derib’s stunning artwork throughout depicts scenes of falling snow, vivid flashbacks and eerie dream sequences that help maintain the atmosphere of tension.
Yakari has appeared in over 30 books since 1973, starred in two television series, appears on walls in various European cities and been translated into 17 languages.
Cinebook has also published and translated other titles in the series: Yakari and Great Eagle (2005), Yakari and the White Buffalo (2005), Yakari and the Beavers (2006), Yakari and the Grizzly (2006), Yakari and the Stranger (2007), Yakari: The Island Prisoners (2009), Yakari and the White Fleece (2010), Yakari and the Coyote (2011), Yakari: The River of Forgetfulness (2012), Yakari and Nanabhozo (2013), Yakari: Little Thunder's Secret (2014), Yakari: The Great Burrow (2015), Yakari: Lords of the Plains (2016) and Yakari: The Lake Monster (2018).
