Little Trulsa's Tea Party
by Ester Ringner-Lundgren
Age Range: 6-8
Little Trulsa is a girl troll who lives in a tree-stump inside a hazel thicket with her mother, father, sister Pearl, brother Trulle and cat Prrr. Little Trulsa is helping her mother bake buns to take to the dolls tea party she is planning in Troll Meadow. Little Trulsa puts a few buns and a bottle of lemonade inside her basket and together with Prrr and Roseflower, her doll, they set off for the party where they are joined by Vippa, Little Trulsa’s best friend, Joss the hare and five hedgehogs. They are all having a lovely time, eating the buns, drinking lemonade, playing games and solving riddles when Mrs Bitter Grey, a quarrelsome old woman sees the group and asks them to help her with her allotment. The children agree willingly and set about weeding the potato patch, but the result is not what Mrs Bitter Grey had in mind!
This is another endearing story in the series of ‘Little Trulsa’ books by Swedish author Ester Ringner-Lundgren (1907-1993) about a world inhabited by trolls and anthropomorphic animals. The delightful well-defined characters are endearing and further enhanced by the appealing delicate and expressive monochromatic orangey tone illustrations by May Bühler which are evocative of the Scandinavian tradition similar to the artwork featured in Moomin books by Tove Jansson, and a perfect match with the simplicity of Ringner-Lundgren’s text.
Written between 1961 and 1975 the series included 24 titles and they were used as a teaching aid in Swedish primary schools during the 1960s and 70s. Other titles featured on the website are: Little Trulsa (1965), Little Trulsa's Secret (1967) and Little Trulsa's Birthday (1968)
