Pinchers and the Dog Chase (The)
by Anders Sparring
Age Range: 9-11
New police officer Clive is rather fierce and even the other police are afraid of him. Everything, even dogs, must have a receipt to prove they’ve not been stolen and the police station has now filled up with dogs without receipts. Of course, the Pincher family don’t have a receipt for anything, especially not their dog Sherlock.
Theo Pincher doesn’t fit in with the rest of his family of criminals. He wants to be a police officer when he grows up; he doesn’t own any tools for stealing and doesn’t take anything without asking and his motto is “a clean conscience is the best pillow.” When Sherlock is threatened with being locked up Theo’s mother Nic thinks of somewhere the police would never think of looking – “with Grandma, In jail.” It turns out Grandma does have a receipt for Sherlock but disaster beckons when Sherlock eats the receipt and is locked up with the other dogs. And it’s left to Theo to work out a plan of how to rescue him.
In this slapstick crime adventure by Swedish author Anders Sparring, translated by Julia Marshall, honest Theo finds an ingenious way to save Sherlock from police officer Clive who it turns out is not all that he seems. The witty narrative along with chatty commentary from the dog, who thinks his name is ‘Shuddup Sherlock’, because, after all, that’s what everyone calls him, make this a funny and entertaining chapter book for young readers.
The lively comical and colourful illustrations by Swedish illustrator Per Gustavsson add to the fun in this bestselling series which has sold over 300,000 copies in Sweden and has been translated into ten languages.
