Pack (The)
by Amanda Cley
Age Range: 6-8
A book of few words but with a powerful message at its core. “Will you try to be like everyone else? Or will you be brave and leave the pack behind?” Italian author Amanda Cley has written a hauntingly philosophical tale full of hidden meaning. The dark and moody artwork by Cecilia Ferri is what makes this book and conveys the concept so well. The second double-page spread image shows the top of a wolf’s head with its fine grey pencil strokes and two eyes appearing at the bottom of the pages which sets the scene for the rest of the book.
“Do what they tell you, accept their protection but maybe lose part of yourself. Or you can accept who you are.” Cley’s words demonstrate that trying to break free from the pack isn't easy, but with courage it’s possible and then you can finally discover who you are. The Pack is quite a sophisticated picture book and might be more suitable for the classroom where it can be used for discussion rather than individual reading.
As the publisher describes “The Pack imagines what happens when a human being wears wolf's clothing. This poetic, powerful book will start unforgettable conversations about identity, peer pressure, and finding one's own path.”
