Litamer alamon khass
by Fatima Sharafeddine
Age Range: 6-8
Litamer alamon khass was included in the ‘Reading the Way’: Inclusive Books from Around the World Research project. The book is not available in English but is referred to as Tamer's Own World throughout the RtW Research. (Full report in the Education Zone of this website)
Tamer's Own World attracted OIW’s interest because it sets out to deconstruct typical autistic behaviour and show how it can be misunderstood. The carefully plotted narrative, supported by lively mixed-media illustrations, gradually reveals Tamer’s positive qualities masked behind the initial external traits.
It is worth noting that there were some questions about the depiction of disability and that the approach adopted by the story was a little 'obvious'. However, the feedback from a parents' focus group was extremely positive as it was felt the depiction of the autistic child was very authentic. There is clearly a place for a book which features convincingly depicted characters on the autistic spectrum.
