Hippobottomus
by Didier Levy
Age Range: Under_5
This hilarious little picture book by French author Didier Lévy will have children giggling right from the start. It’s the time of day when all the animals go down to the river for a drink of water. They are all happy except for the hippopotamus. When the elephant asks “You look worried. What’s wrong?” “My bottom’s too big” replies the hippopotamus. “Can we have a look at it?” the other animals ask. They all have an opinion, but nobody can agree and soon things get out of hand as the animals start to throw rotten fruit at each other. There must be some way to sort out the mess.
Lévy’s delightfully witty and riotous story tackling the insecurity of body image and why it turns out to be so important to the hippopotamus, is complemented by gorgeous and humorous artwork from French artist Marc Boutavant (Around the World with Mouk) which vividly brings to life the animal characters and all their idiosyncrasies.
