Paper Bridge (The)
by Joelle Veyrenc
Age Range: 6-8
Anya lives at the top of a jagged mountain in a village called Paperlee. The delicate trees and houses are all made of paper and the people themselves are paper-thin and paper-light. The villagers lead happy lives apart from fear of the winds which arrive every year during late summer and last for five and a half days. As the time of the winds nears, they tie down their houses and put stones in their pockets to avoid being blown away.
Everyone in the village enjoys kirigami, (a variation of origami, the Japanese art of folding paper) and Anya has a special talent for its cutting and folding. One day, long after the windy season had passed, Anya is knocked over by a great gust of wind while on her way to school. At first, no one believes her, but over the next few days, several villagers are blown over by a sudden gust of wind. Anya wonders what is causing this strange weather. Could it be coming from Forestlee, the village on the neighbouring mountain? She sets out to discover what is causing the great gusts of wind threatening her village inventing a paper bridge that can cross the chasm between her village and Forestlee.
French clinical psychologist and former teacher Jöelle Veyrenc’s debut picture book, translated by Katy Lockwood-Holmes, is an enchanting modern-day fairy story told through exquisitely crafted kirigami scenes by Laos born, French illustrator and painter Seng Soun Ratanavanh. She has constructed a beautiful paper world with 3D scenes from intricately cut and folded paper, exquisite and delicately coloured characters and a stunning indented cover.
The Paper Bridge is completely captivating – a gorgeous heart-warming tale with a message of hope at its core, showing how a series of actions in one community can have a devastating effect on another, and highlighting the impact of climate change and the challenges of working together to protect our shared natural world.
