Cornelia and the Jungle Machine
by Nora Brech
Age Range: 6-8
Cornelia isn’t happy. Her parents have moved to a new house and she doesn’t want to live there because there is no one to play with. While her parents unpack Cornelia explores the grounds surrounding the house and comes across a long ladder hanging from a tall tree. Climbing up she finds a hidden treehouse and Frederick, a boy her own age, sprawled in a hammock and wearing an eyepatch. Frederick shows Cornelia around the treehouse and all his inventions – the most amazing one of all, a magical jungle machine.
This debut picture book by Norwegian author/illustrator Nora Brech, translated by Don Bartlett, takes readers on a magical journey into the jungle immersing them in a cinematic world of larger than life trees, animals and mechanical wonders. Brech cleverly plays with perspectives and the imaginative detailed artwork is gothic in style. With minimal text, it is the illustrations that are the star here. Children are sure to get lost in the pages as they follow Cornelia and Frederick into the jungle.
