‘We need the literature of other countries to expand our
horizons and stimulate our ideas. Without it, we are not only
diminished, we are starved’
(The Times, Magnus Linklater 29/06/05)
by Samuel Narh
Age Range: Under_5
Five-year-old Maisie has an adventurous spirit and a vivid imagination. She enjoys the wonderful folk tales about Anansi that her Dada tells her, while Mama is her source of reassurance and comfort when she is upset or scared. They come from different places; each using different words for the same thing – “Mama says tomato. Dada say aamo”, they wear different clothes and cook different foods, but they hug her in the same way, praise her in the same way, nag her in the same way and most of all they love her in the same way.
Author Samuel Narh was born and raised in Ghana and the lyrical scrapbook journey through the changing seasons as it celebrates cultural difference is inspired. Complimented by the beautiful mixed-media artwork from UK illustrator Jo Loring-Fisher, the use of colour, shading and texture for the different seasons, everyday family scenes and the fantasy of Dada’s folk tales, often covering double-page spreads, are both vibrant and expressive. At the heart of this book is the simple message of unconditional love.
