Mini Mia and Her Darling Uncle
by Pija Lindenbaum
Age Range: 6-8
Mini Mia loves her darling Uncle. They hang out together in café’s, go for walks, go swimming, to the opera; Tommy dyes Mini Mia’s hair a different colour every day and they do lots of other fun stuff. But one day Fergus appears in her Uncle’s kitchen. Mini Mia doesn’t want to share her favourite uncle with anyone.
Mini Mia and her Darling Uncle is a witty tale by Swedish author and illustrator Pia Lindenbaum. The lovely comic illustrations show Mini Mia’s three ‘boring’ Uncles in their work attire contrasted with Tommy in his bright shirts, trendy hair style and goatee beard. It's clear (to adults, anyway) that the ‘darling uncle’ is a gay man, but Lindenbaum focuses not on his identity but on his niece Mini Mia's resentment of his new partner. At the centre of the story is Mini Mia’s feeling that she is no longer the centre of her Uncle’s attention and her growing jealousy. Eventually Mini Mia's anger retreats and the final vignette show Fergus, Tommy and Mini Mia sitting companionably on Tommy's couch.
