Grandpa's 14 Games
by Zhao Ling
Age Range: 6-8
How did you keep yourself busy at the beginning of the pandemic? Did you go on family walks? Bake bread? Watch new television shows? Chinese author Zhao Ling’s story Grandpa’s 14 Games, translated into English by Helen Wang, tells the story of a little girl playing make-believe for 14 days with her grandpa. With lively illustrations by Huang Lili, readers follow the little girl’s adventures of becoming a doctor, an artist, a scientist, a police officer, a soldier, a reporter, and many more. Every day, the little girl has something to look forward to, distracting herself from the fear of the new virus.
Grandpa’s 14 Games is part of Cardinal Media’s series called Hopeful Picture Books, showing the pandemic through a child’s eyes. In this particular story in the collection, the little girl has to deal with both of her parents being away fighting the new virus. Perhaps some of the games that the little girl plays will inspire you in case you are ever stuck in isolation!
