Story of Violet (The)
by Tereza Stehlíková
Age Range: 9-11
Violet is a dreamer. She talks to the trees and the flowers in her garden and instead of watching TV she tried to learn the language of plants and animals which is no easy task. At night Violet has the strangest dreams too – about talking lakes, a fiery red devil, a spider who weaves an intricate web and a Blue Bird. Each dream is a valuable lesson in showing her how to look and discover that the world is beautiful and full of meaning.
The Story of Violet is a philosophical tale about dreams and longing and about the mystery and wonders of the world that will appeal to children and adults alike. This is an unusual book by Czech born author and illustration Tereza Stehlíková. The illustrations have an ethereal quality expressing the dream sequences in rich, vibrant colour. Although not translated from Czech into English this is a bilingual book in both languages with the English text being translated into Czech by Jane Tillotson.
