Water: Discovering the Precious Resource all Around Us
by Olga Fadeeva
Age Range: 9-11
Russian author and illustrator Olga Fadeeva has created another attractively illustrated non-fiction book about Water following on from her book about wind - Wind: Discovering Air in Motion.
Full of fascinating facts, translated by Lena Traer, the text poses questions that are then answered with a chatty narrative blended with scientific fact – ‘Does water make you wonder?’ how much water is on Earth? why does it rain? what do clouds tell us about the weather and how are rainbows and water related? There are also questions on what lakes, rivers seas and oceans are and how we should harness the power of water and protect this amazing resource for the future.
Fadeeva works mainly in watercolour and acrylic and the artwork is colourful and descriptive. She explains at the back of the book that she “generously sprinkled, dripped and thinned acrylic paints with water” using approximately 10 litres to create the book.
Like Wind (reviewed on the OIW website), this engaging book is an ideal way to explore the very essential role of water on our planet.
