Enduring Ark (The)
by Gita Wolf
Age Range: 6-8
The Enduring Ark is a unique Indian retelling of the Biblical tale of Noah the great flood. The text by Gita Wolf is fresh and compelling but what really makes this book stand out is the rich and vibrant Bengal Patua style of scroll paintings in bright colours that just leap off the page. Indian illustrator Joydeb Chitrakar has created a true feast for the eyes that takes the reader, from the double page opening of a big, all-encompassing eye surveying the world, to Noah’s ark surrounded by the swirling turbulent waves and finally to a rainbow of hope.
This beautifully illustrated book really brings the story alive but it is the ingenuity of the presentation, (in its smart slip case) that makes it so special. The clever construction means that you can either read it as a conventional book by turning the pages or as a double-sided concertina scroll, which, opens out to reveal the spectacular artwork.
The Enduring Ark will be a book to treasure and worth reading again and again.
