Tales of Hans Christian Andersen
by Hans Christian Andersen
Age Range: 9-11
This edition of Tales of Hans Christian Andersen was published by Walker Books to celebrate Andersen’s bicentenary year in 2005. All of the stories, with the exception of (The Nightingale, The Princess and the Pea, and The Little Match Girl), where just minor changes to the text have been made, were translated by the late Naomi Lewis, who was a leading authority on the works of Hans Christian Andersen.
Each story is accompanied by a light-hearted introduction written by Lewis explaining how and why Hans Christian Andersen came to write them, and encouraging the reader to think about their meaning.
Joel Stewart’s colour illustrations are unique and evocative. At the front of the book is an austere monochrome portrait of Andersen. Set into the side of his head is a red curtain of a theatre ready to go up to reveal the imagination within. Every story opens with a tableau that presents the main characters on the stage and the black-and-white bordered drawings throughout are atmospheric. This is a beautiful sumptuous edition that both children (and adults) will treasure.
