Alligator Mike
by Jurg Federspiel
Age Range: Under_5
Mike was playing with his ball when it bounced into a rubbish bin. He jumped in after it and discovered too late that the bin didn’t have a bottom, so he ended up plummeting straight down a tunnel, deep underground beneath New York City.
Mike met many strange characters down in this murky world. The oddest thing of all was that there were hundreds of alligators – green ones and ghostly white ones, who had lost their green colour due to the length of time they’d been underground. Their attire was strange too; many were dressed elegantly with fine clothes and jewellery, all found in the sewers.
They spent their time trading insults with each other because they were angry and a long way from their home in the swamps of Florida. Can Mike come up with a plan to get the alligators out of the sewers and back to the swamp where they belong?
An unusual story by Jürg Federspiel with lovely, comic illustrations by Petra Rappo. The simplicity of the cartoon-like artwork with their bold black lines delineating the brightly coloured figures will endear Mike and his alligator friends to young readers.
