Babar's Book of Colour
by Phyllis Rose de Brunhoff
Age Range: 6-8
Babar is busy in his art studio drawing and painting. Suddenly his three children, Pom, Flora and Alexander, together with their cousin Arthur come to see him. They are very keen to do some painting too. Each one chooses a colour from a selection of red, blue, yellow, white and black. They paint some cherries and lobster using the colour red. Pom’s favourite colour is blue and he paints a blue sky over a blue whale in the blue ocean. Then there are yellow bees, white snow, polar bears and even a white snow elephant. For the black they paint cat and black birds.
After all the paining they have a break while Babar teaches them a very useful and important lesson about colours using three balloons: a red, yellow and blue. Babar explains that by combining two balloons together you get a third colour. Red and yellow makes orange, blue and yellow makes green and blue and read makes purple.
This is a fantastic book to teach children all about colours and to facilitate the exploration of different combinations and mixtures, as well as to associate objects and animals with their precise colour schemes.
Created by Jean de Brunhoff in 1931 from an original bedtime story by his wife, Babar has lived on through his son Laurent de Brunhoff who has kept his spirit alive for more than 50 years. Building on the original framework he has created many new and exciting adventures for the elephant family.
