Great Grrrrr
by Marie-Sabine Roger
Age Range: Under_5
The Great Grrrrr is a monster on a mission. He drives his GRRREXPRESS van advertising “quick parcels” and “speedy packages” delivered in minutes. He looks a little scary with the spikes down his back, his large hairy ears and expressive eyes. The Great Grrrrr has a package to deliver to a quaint pink cottage. He rings the doorbell several times but no one answers. Patiently he scratches and taps the door. Still no answer. Then it starts to rain and the Great Grrrrr’s frustration begins to bubble up until finally he loses control and his anger erupts like a volcano. Before he knows it, he has crushed the building to bits! When the homeowner, a 99-year-old grandmother, who has been out on an errand, returns she teaches the Great Grrrrr a lesson in patience and, with his anger dissipated, he is determined to put things right.
French author Marie-Sabine Roger has created a funny and entertaining book, translated by Angus Yuen-Killick, about the impatience and uncontrolled anger of this short-fused monster as he takes his frustration to ridiculous levels. The simply executed and expressive illustrations by Marjolaine Leray in sketchy two-tone crayon with dark accentuated lines for the Great Grrrrr are contrasted with bright bursts of pink for the gift, cottage and grandmother’s clothes. Reminiscent of childlike scribble along with the minimal text helps to accentuate the build-up of the Great Grrrrr’s anger. It is left to the last double-page spread to tell the reader of the Great Grrrrr’s willingness to rebuild what he has destroyed.
A charming and engaging picture book demonstrating the importance of learning to be patient and of controlling anger.
