Sammy and the Skyscraper Sandwich
by Lorraine Francis
Age Range: Under_5
Sammy is hungry, in fact, he is very, very hungry, and so he makes himself the biggest sandwich ever. It just gets bigger and bigger and bigger. Soon, Sammy has two carts filled with delectable ingredients to put in his sandwich including crusty bread with poppy seeds, a big tub of chocolate spread, salami, Swiss cheese, grated carrot and a saucer of sardines, three jars of jam and a sprig of parsley. The towering sandwich is massive, but Sammy is still not finished. Multiple layers later, Sammy has created a gargantuan skyscraper. The only problem he has now is how on earth is he going to eat it?
Sammy and the Skyscraper Sandwich by Irish author Lorraine Francis and Belgian illustrator Pieter Gaudesaboos, (first published in Dutch), is a zany, colourful story that will appeal to young children as they will have great fun reading and appreciating its craziness. Gaudesaboos uses a variety of styles from the thick, cartoonish outlining of Sammy to the more delicate detailed work of the various foods and how the skyscraper evolves and grows. This large-format board book with cardboard pages throughout is ideal for toddlers and for sharing and reading aloud.
