Glass Word (The)
by Kai Meyer
Age Range: 9-11
The Glass Word is the third book in Kai Meyer’s fantasy trilogy following on from The Flowing Queen which won the Marsh Award for Children’s Books in Translation in 2007.
Egypt is being ravaged by Winter and Merle, Vermithrax and Junipa must battle through the icy winds and swirling snowstorms to defeat the terrifying Sphinxes. Elsewhere, Serafin, Eft and Lalapeya are desperately searching for Merle as they carry the knowledge of who Merle really is and the secret of the Glass Word - the key that will unlock other worlds – that could save Venice. However, the Pharoah and the Sphinxes can only be completely destroyed if someone is prepared to make a final sacrifice that will ensure peace is restored.
Despite being beautifully crafted novels with the poetic prose captured perfectly by translator Anthea Bell, they require a level of sophistication by the reader in order to follow their many threads. It is a distinct advantage to read one after the other otherwise it’s often difficult to remember some of the complexity.
