April the Red Goldfish
by Marjolaine Leray
Age Range: Under_5
April the Red Goldfish is the second book by French author and illustrator Marjolaine Leray, available in English following Little Red Hood published by Phoenix Yard Books.
April is different. She is a very red teenage goldfish with issues. April is also a lonely red goldfish seeking adventure and searching for the meaning of life. Leray incorporates her usual zany humour as April ponders some deep questions. ‘To be, or not to be … picked over?’ and there are some difficult teenage years with her aquaholic parents. There is pathos too, when April finds she is all alone and brief dark moments when she feels suicidal.
April’s aspirations include escaping her goldfish bowel and travelling the world, making friends, becoming a pirate or even a PUNK!
Leray has produced another elegant, witty and sophisticated picture book with some philosophical elements that will appeal as much to adults as it will to children.
The child-like scribble illustrations in predominantly red and black with a touch of blue and yellow dotted throughout, will capture any child’s imagination. Little Red Hood was a hard act to follow but Leray seems to have matched its style effortlessly in this second book.
