HIC!
by Anushka Ravishankar
Age Range: Under_5
HIC! is a quirky, nonsense verse about getting rid of Hiccups. It’s tongue-in-cheek rhyme is about a young girl as she tries, without success, to cure her hiccups in eight rather unconventional ways! No matter how absurd they are she’s willing to give it a go – from drinking a pail of water, standing on a brick to putting mustard up her nose or spinning round like a top there is plenty of silliness here. Not surprisingly, the methods to curb hiccups are not successful and after every failed attempt she has a massive ‘hiccup’ explosion that shakes everyone around her.
Award-winning poet and writer Anushka Ravishankar has written a perfect interactive book that children can have great fun with as they imitate the hiccups. There is even a challenge to readers to come up with their own ideas of how to stop hiccups.
The lively and amusing artwork by German Illustrator Christiane Pieper have a lovely retro-feel with their soy-based pale blue, black and brown ink on a white background. The book is printed with innovative Japanese technology called Riso. This combines the technology of screen printing with that of a photocopier machine. By using these environmentally friendly soy-based inks, which are transparent, they can produce unmatched results with overlays.
HIC! is great fun and will cause lots of giggles as children read of the daft antics to find a cure.
