Two Little Red Mittens
by Kirin Hayashi
Age Range: Under_5
Little red left mitten and little red right mitten enjoy their life together as a pair keeping Little One’s hands warm during the depth of winter. While they hang by the fireside to dry the two mittens promise each other to “keep those tiny fingers toasty warm tomorrow, and the next day, and the next.” But one day everything changes when Little One loses the right mitten while playing outside. A passing fox gently hangs the lost mitten on a branch for the owner to find but sadly it remains undiscovered and alone.
During the night a blizzard howls and the right mitten falls beneath a tree. Now its adventures began as a variety of woodland creatures decide they want it for themselves – a mother rabbit thought it would make the perfect tea cosy while her offspring use the mitten as a nightcap. A group of cheeky mice have other ideas and engage in a tug of war with the young bunnies ripping the mitten although it’s still useful to snuggle under at night! Although the left red mitten has a nice new red mitten knitted by Little One’s mother it still worries about its friend and wants to know that it’s safe.
Two Little Red Mittens is a charming story by Japanese author Kirin Hayashi, translated by Avery Fischer Udagawa. Although the ending is bittersweet it demonstrates the power of friendship and how the caring animals, who find the lost right mitten, want to love and cherish it. Chiaki Okada’s gorgeous illustrations, with their muted palette, allow the bright red mittens to be the focus on every page. She beautifully captures the experiences of the red right mitten and enhances this unusual story.
