‘We need the literature of other countries to expand our
horizons and stimulate our ideas. Without it, we are not only
diminished, we are starved’

by Tomoko Ohmura
Age Range: Under_5
Queuing can be extremely dull, but not for these fifty different animals of all shapes and sizes. What is it that they are all waiting for? There is a tiger and frog, sheep and skunk, giraffe and elephant all being directed to line up in an orderly fashion by a very efficient seagull.
Tomoko Ohmura, an award-winning author and illustrator from Tokyo, Japan, has created a whimsical and witty tour of the animal kingdom.
As the numbers decrease so the size of the animals increases.
Number 38 is a skunk and next in the queue is number 39 an armadillo who complains bitterly of the smell while number 4 is a Hippotamus who
‘can’t wait another second’ and number 3 a Rhinoceros claims ‘I’m going to charge’.
The bold, eye-catching illustrations against a white background will ensure that children enjoy counting and noting the different animals and their sizes, whilst older children will appreciate reading the witty repartee and solving the mystery. There is lots of humour and a surprise climax is revealed in the fun gatefold at the end.
An ideal book for reading aloud as well as for learning to count and about different animals.
