Paris Up, Up and Away
by Helene Druvert
Age Range: 9-11
Paris Up, Up and Away by French author and designer Hélène Druvert is a stunning, intricate masterpiece using laser-cut silhouettes. Everywhere, there is so much detail; from the die cut front cover showing rooms inside a town house to the title page with a bridge across the river Seine with people passing by, or at the back of the book a map of Paris depicting important landmarks.
Open each page and there is a true feast for the eyes. With its palette of minimalist colours of black, white and the occasional blue/grey Paris Up, Up and Away gives homage to Paris as ‘La Ville Lumiére’ (The City of Light), often referred to, not only because of its role during the Age of Enlightenment but also because it was one of the first European cities to adopt gas street lighting.
"The Eiffel Tower is bored today.
Wouldn't it be nice to fly away?
PARIS is full of things to do.
The Tower would like to see them too."
The amusing rhyming text takes the reader on a journey through Paris with the words cleverly encased in between cut-outs, but it is the artwork that steals the show. Every page is so delicate with its lace-like quality that you are almost afraid to touch them.
The laser-cut silhouettes in both black and white provide wonderful contrasts between night and day – The white silhouette of the Opéra house is set against a night sky, while a department store, with its escalators showing people moving between the different floors, is in black against a white background.
Paris Up, Up and Away will take your breath away with its beauty and is definitely a book to treasure. An art book that will be appreciated by older children and Adults too.
