Cat and Dog: A Tale of Opposites
by Tullio Corda
Age Range: Under_5
“Cat and Dog are not the same, in fact, they are opposites!”
Building on the popular concept of opposites Italian author and illustrator Tullio Corda (now resident in France) has created a story of just 32 words on the differences between Cats and Dogs. This is a very original take compared to the usual opposite books with their range of different concepts on each page.
The two protagonists, a Cat and a Dog are unlikely playmates but they leap across the pages chasing each other through a variety of scenarios. The sparse text allows the reader to focus on the visual narrative and enjoy their adventures.
Corda has created delightful and fun visual clues in the artwork that implicitly extend beyond the page drawing the reader into the action. The simple, mainly two-tone colour palette of bright orange for the cat and rich blue for the dog with occasional yellow and green for the additional scenery. Clever smudges of colour indicate movement as the reader follows the antics of these two endearing characters. Their familiar relationship will be known to most young readers but there is a lovely surprise at the end!
