My Dog Mouse
by Eva Lindstrom
Age Range: Under_5
A young girl regularly asks the owner of Mouse if she can take him for a walk in the park. Mouse is old, he waddles at a snail’s pace, is a little over-weight and has long droopy ears. Despite this the narrator loves Mouse very much.
Award-winning Swedish artist Eva Lindström has written and illustrated a simple and humorous tale. The expressive artwork, in a mixture of water colour and pencil etching, capture the mood so well – the companionship of the two and their affection for one another is endearing, while also showing everyday things such as dogs fighting in the park and the change in the weather as the wind picks up with the swirling leaves. There is also a bit of social commentary too, with the abandoned supermarket trolley and cigarette ends discarded on the ground. Lindström is adept at displaying the fun the pair enjoy while also portraying the longing of the little girl: the most poignant image being on the final page, where half of Mouse’s head peers over the window sill and the narrator comments “I wish Mouse was mine”.
My Dog Mouse is a funny, original and heart-warming story.
