Vitello carries a Knife
by Kim Fupz Aakeson
Age Range: 6-8
Vitello wants to be a tough guy just like the man in the film he has been watching on TV; he was as hard as nails, rude to everyone and not scared of anything. With his mum’s butter knife tucked into his belt Vitello decides he is going to emulate his hero. He’s rude to his friends Max and Harry, but they don’t seem to notice, so he tries being even tougher with a big white growling dog who bares its teeth at him. What Vitello isn’t expecting however, is that the dog is able to escape from its garden through a hole in the fence. Now Vitello really is in trouble!
Danish author Kim Fupz Aakeson has created a series of stories depicting the trials and tribulations of the mischievous Vitello. The world is seen through his eyes as he narrates his escapades with a wonderful off-beat humour. The cartoon-like illustrations by Niels Bo Bojesen really lend themselves to the story making Vitello an instantly lovable character.
There are some very amusing illustrations of Vitello trying to be tough and ending up on the run with a dog in hot pursuit. By the end of the story Vitello has decided that he might as well put the knife away and be a tough guy another day or maybe not at all.
A best-seller series in Denmark, there are four other books about Vitello: Vitello Scratches a Car, Vitello gets a Yucky Girlfriend, Vitello wants a Dad and Vitello becomes a Businessman.
