Little Flower King (The)
by Kvéta Pacovská
Age Range: 6-8
The Little Flower King wants to fill his kingdom with beautiful flowers. He plants every acre of his land with tulip bulbs and when they bloom the display is truly magnificent. But the Little Flower King is still not content; his heart is empty and full of longing. There is one thing missing that would make him really happy. What he needs is a companion – a Princess. The Little Flower King sets out to search for one at once travelling through his lands in search of true happiness. Finally he discovers his princess amid the petals of one of his tulips.
Written and illustrated by award-winning Czech artist Kveta Pacovska The Little Flower King is a light hearted, whimsical tale full of childlike splendour. In her usual inimitable style it brims with a kaleidoscope of rich saturated colour combinations featuring paint, pencil and collage on every page, together with innovative die-cuts in the shape of small windows that reveal the king as he peers out of the pages.
First published in German in 1987, it first appeared in English in 1992 and has now been issued in an elegant slipcase gift-size version by Minedition. This really is a delightful fairy tale that will appeal to children as well as adult fans of Pacovska’s work.
