Roll, Roll Little Pea
by Cecile Bergame
Age Range: Under_5
A little girl sits at a table shelling peas when one accidentally drops onto the floor and rolls away across the tiles and under the sideboard. Now the adventure begins. On its journey, the little pea encounters a variety of animals who would like to consume it – the mouse wants to “TASTE”, the cat to “CRUNCH”, the rabbit to “NIBBLE “ and the pig to “MUNCH” but the runaway pea continues to escape until finally “plop! It drops into a hole.”
This delightfully quirky story by French author Cécile Bergame, translated by Angus Yuen-Killick, takes a novel approach to explain the life cycle of plants to a younger audience. As the little pea disappears into the ground it lays dormant but soon new shoots and tendrils emerge the following spring and then there is a new little pea.
Within the text, the action words used to describe how the different animals plan to devour the little pea are highlighted in bold capital letters, providing emphasis and an excellent way of introducing new vocabulary. The repeated refrain of “ROLL, ROLL LITTLE PEA” on each page also make this book ideal for sharing and reading aloud. The striking bold coloured artwork by Magali Attiogbé is sharply outlined and full of vibrancy which can’t fail to engage young readers.
