Count on Me
by Miguel Tanco
Age Range: 6-8
Everyone around Katherine seems to have a passion: her dad loves to paint, her mum studies entomology and her brother is good at music. Katherine has tried her hand at acting, dancing, painting, cooking, singing, music and sport, but she knows they are just not for her. There is only one thing Katherine has a passion for, and that’s maths!
Spanish author and illustrator Miguel Tanco has created a very original story accompanied by bright comic illustrations. Katherine shows that “maths is all around us” – whether it’s in the shape of the trees or the sky at night; in geometric patterns in the playground or the flight of a paper aeroplane, it’s everywhere, sometimes in full view and sometimes hidden. Tanco takes complex mathematical concepts and makes them accessible. Concentric circles may be unfamiliar to many and, are explained by Katherine throwing pebbles into a lake making ripples.
Count Me is the perfect book to encourage a curiosity about maths and demystify the subject. At the back of the book in 'My Maths', it explores the different mathematical concepts from fractals, basic polygons, Concentric circles, types of curves, solid figures, types of trajectories and kinds of sets.
Tanco and the publishers decided to call the little girl in the story Katharine after Katherine Johnson (1918-2020), the American mathematician who helped send astronauts to the moon.
