Goran's Great Escape
by Astrid Lindgren
Age Range: Under_5
Goran is a huge, scary bull… and he’s on the loose! It seems that no one can stop the bull’s angry rampage, but Karl the stable boy has an idea. Can this tiny boy tame an enormous, raging bull?
Astrid Lindgren tells an exciting story in Goran’s Great Escape. With an enormous, angry bull causing chaos, it is not immediately apparent how he will be caught and Lindgren makes sure that the answer surprises us! This is a surprising – and funny- David and Goliath story that pits tiny Karl against large Goran. Children will laugh at the thought of Karl controlling Goran, but will finish the story with a lot of respect for ‘Sweden’s smallest bull fighter’!
This story is also a must for anyone who likes animals. Set on a farm and starring a bull, the rest of the farmyard animals and all the local people are brought to life in Marit Törnqvist’s beautiful watercolour illustrations. Goran especially is brought to life, and the illustrations of him chasing the poor farmhand and having his ears scratched are particularly funny!
Written in Astrid Lindgren’s clear, simple prose and her usual friendly, almost chatty tone, this is a picture book for the upper end of the under-five age range as it has more text per page and a more varied and perhaps difficult vocabulary than books for toddlers. This would also make a good book for those learning to read aged five or six to practice with, giving some challenge with sentence length and words but also reassuringly easy to read in places.
